My 65th birthday. Amanda knows how little I appreciate 'fuss', so of course she adopted a very low-key approach to the celebrations:
Breakfast: M&S "Colin the Caterpillar" cakes and mugs of tea:
Present-opening followed; most are not pictured, but one was worthy of attention. That wife of mine surely knows the way to her man's heart...
Cards:
Out to Deli Flavour for a toasted bacon and brie sandwich and a pot of Earl Grey for lunch:
A quick run over to Kibworth, to check out Kibworth Books, about which we had read but not previously visited:
Amanda picked up some sale bargains:
and I got this rather nice signed copy of Alan Bennett's most recent play, which we saw at the Bridge Theatre in London last August:
Amanda was taken with the knitted hats on the road-side bollards; I managed to contain my excitement:
A short ride to Kibworth Antiques Centre, where we browsed but saw nothing to tempt us:
Home to put our feet up, and then a short walk to our local for dinner:
I like their lasagne, and to go with it am always sure to order the healthier salad in place of the optional garlic bread; this goes a long way to off-setting the bowl of chips on the side...
Amanda was well pleased with her 'ham, eggs and chips' - also redeemed by a salad:
Amanda finished with Black Forest Trifle, while I brought things to a conclusion with a slice of their always-excellent cheesecake:
By the time we had finished, local Morris dancers had started to perform in the rear court-yard:
...which gave us the perfect excuse to make our exit through the front door, from where it was a short walk home and time to catch up with the day's events:
The next day, Amanda's helium balloons (which she had smuggled into the house by various acts of guile and deception) provided the perfect opportunity for an experiment I had often wondered about trying: What length of fishing line would two helium balloons support?
The answer was "quite a long one"...
