Canada - Day 6

Up to a cold and cloudy day. Out to the local Starbucks at 474 Rue McGill for breakfast. (Inset: This branch is now permanently closed; in June 2020 Starbucks announced that it was closing 200 branches across Canada in response to "changes in consumer habits during the COVID-19 pandemic").

Out, into an increasingly dreary morning.  We headed down to the waterfront.

But wait - what's that in the distance?

Again, fascinated more by the crane than by the local architecture, I watched a number of tables being lowered from a roof-top terrace to a truck below:

The Saga Sapphire was still docked:

but there were signs of it taking on provisions:

Well - every other tourist in Montreal seems to use this as a peep-hole:

so why not us?:

Along the river bank: On the right of the picture is the Jacques Cartier Bridge and next to that is the Molson Brewery.  On the left is the Heritage du Vieux-Port apartment complex.  At the time of writing one of the four penthouses with its own tower level will set you back around £4.3M:

Views downriver:

A view back to the city:

We approached the Montreal Clock Tower, but by now it had started to rain and we were cold and damp; we agreed to retrace our steps and seek refreshments in the Bonsecours Market:

On the way we saw Notre Dame de Bon Secours Chapel

I have to admit that when I first looked at the chapel I got quite a shock.  It appeared to me that the objects on the two closest towers were horned, demonic faces with blazing white eyes; it was only when I zoomed in that I realised that they were, in fact, angels...:

Into the Market:

and the cafe:

where cold drinks and cake recharged us:

Out, and heading 'homewards' along Rue Notre Dame to the Basilica where, given that the queues were not too long, we were tempted inside for a second visit:

By the time we exited the sun had come out, and we made our way back to the hotel, via our local Couche-Tard convenience store:

located at this junction:

Back to the hotel for a rest:

Out, to find the weather much improved.  We strolled along Rue St Paul, passing last night's dinner venue The Keg:

and on to Modavie:

where we were lucky to get a table.  Amanda seemed pleased with her Griffon ale:

and salmon:

while my lamb burger and fries threatened to (but did not) defeat me:

View out onto the street:

Lemon meringue pie:

and a brownie with ice cream:

I got dem old "I'm so stuffed I couldn't eat another thing" blues:

This was our last night in Montreal, so we took a final walk along the river:

and then headed back to the hotel to begin packing for our departure the next day.
